AI Won’t Fix Your Your Design Problem

Design Is Much More Than Making Things Look Nice

Every feed, every portfolio, every pitch deck has exploded with content since AI arrived. Open a design tool today, and you can produce more comps before lunch than a studio used to ship in a year.

Capable no longer moves the needle.

The market didn’t get less competitive because output got cheaper. It got more crowded. Crowded markets don’t reward more. They reward the exception.

So the question isn’t whether AI can design. It is whether models can rise above their data sets. Can they move the art forward? Understand cultural trends? Can it go viral?

The Resting State

A model doesn’t have a point of view. It has a distribution. Ask it for a landing page, a poster, a brand mark, and it reaches for what has been done. It reaches for what’s been done the most. That’s not a bug. It’s a systematic limitation.

Left to its own devices, it pulls everything to the center. The median.

Clever prompting can improve the situation, but it won’t ever break out. It does what is statistically safe by design.

It is the definition of designing inside the box.

Training data is a photograph of the past. Culture doesn’t hold still for that photo. Trends are moving targets, and that takes judgment, curation, and acumen. A model can’t tell you what’s about to happen. Only a human can do that.

Here are six pieces, pulled from AI design prompting guides.

Look familiar? These designs look like they came right from a WordPress template gallery. No personality, no perspective. One size fits all.

Here are six pieces, pulled from web gallery award sites.

A Point of view. A Break from the ordinary. And most importantly, layouts that solve design problems.

The Origin of Inspired Design

Design is problem-solving first. Making things look good is just part of that process.

Problems and hypotheses get identified before anyone opens a design tool. The answers lie in calls with stakeholders describing their vision. In a support queue full of the same complaint, or in a customer showing you what isn’t working. That’s the backbone of UX design, and it’s also where solutions start to take form. The designer walks into a first draft already clear on what they’re solving for.

AI doesn’t have a seat in early conversations. A good prompt assumes someone else did that work and handed over the summary. But a good prompt only gets you part of the way.

What Actually Works

The zone will always be flooded. What matters is what cuts through it. What stands out from the crowd. What stops the scroll.

The median is more invisible than ever. That is true for WordPress templates. That is true for AI design. Human designers will make the difference. The research nobody sees. The cultural relevance that great agencies identify. The years of design acumen that no machine can ever replace.

AI doesn’t replace that work. It excels in removing the constraints around it. Once the hard work is done, it can make you that much more productive.

Vibrant imagery to use in your designs? Pushing through creative block? AI is the most exciting and powerful tool in decades, but it is not a designer. That is a human’s job.
